Dancing Shiva (Natraj)

This popular image of the Hindu deity Shiva symbolizes the dynamic forces of creation and destruction and harmonious balance. He is circled by flames symbolizing universe. His four arms, which represent the four directions, signify his omnipresence. The drum in one of his right hands represents the sound of creation; the other gestures "do not be afraid" (Abhaya). A left hand holds a flame, the essence of creation and destruction, and the other points to the lifted right foot, symbolic of release from the cycles of death and rebirth. Under Shiva's feet is the dwarf Purusha (forgetfulness), representing man's ignorance which must be overcome.

Ganesha (Ganesh)

Ganesha, one of the most popular and recognizable Hindu deities, is the lord of success and remover of obstacles. His elephantine head symbolizes wisdom and the soul (Atman), which is the ultimate reality of human existence, and his human body signifies the earthly existence of mankind (Maya). His trunk represents Om, the sound of creation, which he uses to eat sweets (laddoo), indicating one must discover the sweetness of the Atman. In his upper right hand Ganesha holds a goad which helps him prod man forward on the eternal path and remove obstacles from the way. The lasso in his left hand snares difficulties. The broken tusk in his lower right hand, which he broke to write the Mahabharata, is a symbol of sacrifice. The rosary in his other hand suggests that the pursuit of knowledge should be continuous. His fan-like ears convey he listens to petitions. A snake that runs round his waist represents energy. And he rides a mouse, a subjugated demon of vanity and impertinence.
